Tempeh, A Better Alternative To Tofu

All the vegetarians out there are surely familiar with tempeh. This close cousin of tofu is a staple food in Indonesia as a healthy protein source. If you are looking for a better-tasting alternative to tofu, then look for tempeh in specialty supermarkets, Asian food stalls and health stores.

This healthy soy food is an excellent source of manganese, protein, copper, phosphorous, magnesium and vitamin B2. Due to its high fiber content, tempeh is a food which is easily digestible, making it ideal for your digestive tract while at the same time preventing some known chronic diseases. Tempeh is also good for those who need to be in a low-sodium diet.

Diabetics can use tempeh as a healthier and safer alternative protein source since it helps stabilize the blood sugar level. Men who regularly consume tempeh are less prone to prostate cancer. Aside from its many nutritious components, tempeh also helps reduce bad cholesterol and it promotes gastrointestinal health.

Tempeh can be broiled to replace the meat in your favorite sandwich recipe. Just like tofu, it goes deliciously with stir-fried veggies, and it also combines well with a bowl of chili. Enjoy!
