The Importance Of Cauliflower

cali.jpg

Cauliflower is a vegetable that may be liked by few but is known for containing nutrients that fight against several diseases.

There are two main ingredients in cauliflower that are the main ingredients for fighting disease. These are indole-3-carbinol, or 13C, and the photo nutrient sulforaphane. In resent research, sulforaphane was shown to lower the occurrence of breast tumors in lab animals by almost 40%.

Cauliflower also contains vitamin C and folate. Folate helps the blood work more efficiently and is often recommended for preventing anemia. Folate is also essential for proper tissue growth and not getting enough can make you susceptible to many diseases down the road such as cancer and heart disease. Vitamin C is considered an antioxidant. When used alongside other antioxidants such as vitamin E and beta-carotene, your body’s immune system will stay strong.

Eating three florets of cauliflower a day will provide 67% of your daily vitamin C requirement. When purchasing cauliflower, make sure the tops are white. If the floret has begun to spot brown or purple, it is not as nutritionally beneficial. Eating cauliflower raw will give you the highest nutritional benefits, however, if you must cook it, lightly steaming it will keep its nutritional value high.

Heart Attack And Depression

dep.jpg

Recent studies have shown that as many as 65% of people who have a heart attack feel depressed. Women who have been depressed before and people who feel alone, without emotional support are at a higher risk for feeling depressed after a heart attack. Two new studies have shown that women are more likely to experience chronic depression after suffering a heart attack and lead lives of poorer quality following their treatments.

Being depressed can make it harder for a patient to recover. People that are quickly able to get back to their usual routines seem to experience less depression.

Can heart disease trigger depression or depression trigger heart disease?

Either of the above may be true, one thing seems clear. The two often go hand in hand, therefore controlling one may help control the other.

According to The American Academy of Family Physicians, research has shown that people who are depressed and have pre-existing cardiovascular disease have a 3.5 times greater risk of dying of a heart attack than patients with heart disease who are not depressed. As well, in a recent study, depression was shown to be associated with an increased risk of developing coronary heart disease in men and women. Depression was shown to increase mortality related to coronary heart disease in men but had no effect on mortality in women.

Ask your doctor about using lifestyle changes like avoiding alcohol, illegal drugs, smoking, starting a regular exercise program, eating a balanced diet, reducing stress and getting sufficient rest to fight heart disease and depression.

Do You Hurt Your Heart By Being Angry

mad.JPG

Medical studies are not needed to tell us that anger raises our blood pressure, causes our hearts and heads to pound, makes us sweat and shake, and can make us unreasonable.

Is the answer then to suppress our anger? Anger is an emotion that, when not contained and channeled, can be harmful to the body, especially the heart.

Should you hold anger in, or express it outwardly? Research suggests that either extreme puts you at risk for heart disease.

Anger is hard on your heart! So what is the answer? Try not to get angry in the first place (easier said than done). Failing that suggestion, you can develop your emotional intelligence, and get smart about it.

A study of how men coped with anger revealed that those who were rigid in the way they handle anger, either always holding it in, or always expressing it , had higher total cholesterol and higher bad LDL cholesterol levels than those who were more flexible.

The answer is to be flexible. Sometimes anger should be kept in, and sometimes expressed. If you always hold it in, or always express it, you may be damaging your heart. Practice makes perfect, and it starts with self-awareness.

 flax.jpg

Like olive, canola, and most other plant oils, it is highly unsaturated and heart-healthy. And flaxseeds have yet another very interesting component,  lingam,  which may have anti-cancer properties.

Studies have shown that the health benefits of flaxseed oil are many. It controls high blood pressure, helps to lower cholesterol and guards against heart disease. Flaxseed oil also protects against angina and could prevent a second heart attack.

Also, flax seed oil has some estrogen-like effects and also possible anti-estrogenic effects, both of which have been studied for possible protection against certain types of breast and prostate cancers. However study results were inconclusive.

Flax seed oil promotes good health. Flaxseed and flaxseed oil are rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential fatty acid that appears to be beneficial for heart disease. ALA belongs to a group of substances called omega-3 fatty acids.
